West Ham have sent scouts to watch Red Bull Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate, according to reports in Germany.
German media outlet Sport Bild – via ESPN – reports that Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham have all been scouting Konate in action.
Konate is a regular for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga with scouts from the three London clubs spotted at matches.
Who is Ibrahima Konate?
Konate moved from Sochaux to RB Leipzig in summer 2017, penning a five-year deal until the summer of 2022.
He had already played 13 games for Sochaux as a teenager and arrived as a highly-rated young defender.
In one-and-a-half seasons with RB Leipzig, the 19-year-old has played 41 games, including 21 this season.
Standing at 6ft 4in tall, Konate is a dominant centre-half, as shown by his record of 63 aerial duels won in 19 Bundesliga and Europa League matches, as per Who Scored.
Despite being a teenager, the France under-20 international enjoys regular playing time in a top European division and could be a shrewd long-term addition.
Do West Ham need a new defender?
West Ham currently have just two fit centre-backs in the senior squad. Issa Diop, who is also a France youth international, and Angelo Ogbonna have been forced to play every game.
Fabian Balbuena should be back by March, adding to West Ham’s options in defence.
But Reece Oxford is on loan at FC Augsburg and his future is up in the air. And Winston Reid has been out for nearly 12 months with a serious injury.
The Hammers could use another defender and Konate could be the man for the job.
