West Ham United boss David Moyes is being linked with a move for Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall.
West Ham may need to address their defensive options this summer.
Angelo Ogbonna turns 34 at the end of next season, the jury is still out over Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena looks set to leave.
West Ham do have some hugely promising young defenders emerging like Jamal Baptiste, but next season could come too soon.
Hammers want Worrall claims report
Now Hammers manager Moyes is said to be monitoring former England Under 21 international Joe Worrall.
The 6ft 4in defender spent a season on loan at Scottish champions Rangers in 2018/19. He was part of the England Under 20 side which won the famous Toulon Tournament back in 2017.
He went on to establish himself at Forest, for whom he has made over 130 appearances.
West Ham could be the next step in his career according to a new report in The Sun on Sunday (02.05.21, p61).
What would Moyes be getting?
Alan Nixon claims in The Sun on Sunday that the Forest man could be sold for a ‘competitive price’ in the summer to raise money for squad improvements.
Nixon also followed up his story in The Sun on Sunday by posted a message on Twitter about West Ham’s interest.
“West Ham. Been making calls on Joe Worrall at Forest. Moyesie wants an extra defender. Burnley and Norwich also admire,” Nixon told his near 100,000 following.
So what would West Ham be getting. First off he fits the profile of Moyes’s recruitment model since returning to West Ham.
He is powerful, athletic and the right age. Crucially Worrall is also playing in the Championship where Moyes has been looking to pick up players hungry to prove themselves in the Premier League.
Forest defender fits West Ham’s recruitment profile
Signings like Jarrod Bowen have been a real hit for West Ham. That will encourage Moyes that the best from the Championship can step up.
In 30 Championship appearances this season, the Englishman has once again proved why he’s such a key component for Forest. Moyes would undoubtedly have been impressed as Worrall shone helping Forest keep a clean sheet in the draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
West Ham fans may look at the table and wonder why Moyes wants a defender from the team 16th in the Championship.
But a closer look shows Worrall has been the standout performer at the back in a team that has the fourth best defensive record in the entire division.
West Ham do face competition according to the report with the likes of tonight’s opponents Burnley and newly promoted Norwich also interested.
Moyes has an excellent record in the transfer market since coming back to West Ham for a second spell.
And the Scot admitted his transfer funds may be limited.
So a move for Worrall may well have legs.
