West Ham are hot on the trail of Deportivo Alaves defender Guillermo Maripan, according to reports emerging from Spain over the weekend.
Spanish newspaper Sport (via Sport Witness) claim that West Ham and Roma are both ‘closely’ following Maripan ahead of a potential summer move.
The report adds that Alaves will demand €25m for their star central defender, which equates to just over £21m.
Maripan has helped Alaves to fifth place in La Liga this season and his performances have not gone unnoticed with a La Liga exit possible.
Guillermo Maripan: the perfect fit for West Ham
Maripan could be the ideal candidate to help shore things up for West Ham’s leaky defence. In Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena, West Ham have an impressive centre-back pairing but a third top class option would push all three players to the next level.
The 24-year-old is one of the top performing defenders in the Spanish top division this season. In 22 La Liga matches, Maripan has won a staggering 91 aerial duels (Who Scored), showcasing how he uses his 6ft 4in frame to good effect.
This has helped Maripan rack up two goals and two assists, as well as ensure that Alaves remain solid in defence.
As per Who Scored, the physical centre-back has made 46 tackles, 39 interceptions, 125 clearances and 38 blocks this season. These are impressive figures in a competitive league.
The Chile international could also team up with fellow countryman Manuel Pellegrini and join the growing South American contingent at West Ham.
By adding Chilean Maripan to the squad, he would join Manuel Lanzini & Pablo Zabaleta (Argentina), Carlos Sanchez (Colombia), Felipe Anderson (Brazil) and Balbuena (Paraguay) in East London.
