Well known West Ham United fan and insider Sean Whetstone has opened up the conversation about potential new owners.

A large – and growing – section of West Ham fans are deeply unhappy with co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold.

The list of supporter grievances is extensive. But the general running of the club under the decade-long tenure of Sullivan and Gold has not met expectations, on or off the pitch.

On and off the pitch the club is in crisis.

Boiling West Ham fan resentment bubbles to the surface again

But in truth it is a situation that has been brewing for years and simmering tensions which spilled over in 2018 are coming back to the boil.

West Ham fans have been protesting against Sullivan and Gold for a multitude of reasons. Another protest is planned for the Southampton game later this month.

Many have been calling for the duo to sell up.

Fan site caused a stir with owner opinion piece

Claret & Hugh, which regularly claims to have a top level source inside West Ham – believed to be Sullivan himself – published an article titled ‘Will the protests work?’ last week.

The C&H article said: “Fan pressure on the board is unquestionably having an effect and if a genuine, good buyer came in it now has to be more than likely David Sullivan would listen.

“The reality is that no club has to be put up for sale – any interested party can bid at any time. Only time will tell if that is going to happen.”

C&H were at pains to point out the article was an opinion piece and not in any way based on inside information from the West Ham owners.

But well known Hammers fan and Claret & Hugh blogger Sean Whetstone took to Twitter on Sunday to start the conversation again.

US billionaire who wanted Chelsea described as an ‘interesting guy’

Whetstone took to Twitter to champion the prospect of US billionaire as a potential new owner for West Ham.

US Billionaire Todd Boehly is an interesting guy who has admitted he is interested in possibly buying a Premier League team,” Whetstone said on Twitter.

“He is worth around £4.7bn, owns 20% of the LA Dodgers, CEO is of Eldridge Industries, a private investment firm and former president of Guggenheim Partners.”

For some West Ham fans at the moment, anyone would be better than Sullivan and Gold.

Others, though, were quick to point out the potential pitfalls of getting involved with US owners.

There is nothing to suggest Whetstone has inside information that something is brewing.

Interestingly Boehly was educated at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

And just a couple of months ago, he was being linked with a big money takeover of Chelsea (The Sun).
