Two West Ham first-team players linked with surprise late deadline day exits, but it was never going to work

West Ham United have been busy on deadline day, in spite of the lack of any hugely exciting business.

Evan Ferguson joined West Ham on a season-long loan on deadline day, whilst James Ward-Prowse returned to the London Stadium from his failed loan spell with Nottingham Forest.

Maxwel Cornet left the club to join Genoa on loan, but aside from that, nothing of note has happened in the January transfer window really.

Graham Potter‘s remit will be to get the very best out of the current group of players at his disposal.

That will be easier said than done, given how poorly some of them have performed this season.

However, signing players is not always the solution.

Potter is a well-renowned coach, and the onus is now on him to extract the very best that he can from his players.

The current squad is surely strong enough to cope with one game per week between now and the end of the season.

However, it the Hammers’ ranks could have been weakened even further still on deadline day it seems.

Two West Ham players linked with late deadline day exits

The Hammers seemingly could have moved two players on today.

However, it’s far too late in the day for that to be possible now.

Danny Ings was linked with a shock last-minute move to Celtic (Daily Record), but his inclusion in the squad for the Chelsea game made it clear that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Meanwhile, Feyenoord moved in to sign Luis Guilherme late on deadline day according to Football Insider.

However, once again, the Brazilian was included in the Hammers squad to take on Chelsea, so that deal was never going to happen either.

I fully expect Potter to overhaul the squad at the London Stadium in the summer.

For now though, he will have to work with what he’s got, with the added bonus of having Ferguson on board, and Ward-Prowse as well now of course.

Deadline day has passed without too much incident.

Now it’s all about building on the foundations already laid by Graham Potter. The future is bright at West Ham, I’m convinced of it.
