West Ham United are well in the race to sign Logan Costa from Toulouse this summer it seems.

Signing another central defender seems to be a key priority for West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui between now and the end of the summer transfer window.

And Logan Costa could well be the man for the job. The Hammers are said to be leading the race to sign the 23-year-old Cape Verde international this summer.

However, Newcastle have thrown their hat in the ring for his signature, so they definitely could be a problem for us.

I would love Costa at the London Stadium. He’s big and powerful and seems to be ideally suited to the robust and intense nature of Premier League football.

Lopetegui has to bring in an upgrade on Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd this summer – both have been awful over the past 12 months.

Max Kilman has already joined the Hammers, but more central defensive reinforcements are required.

And with a deal for Jean-Clair Todibo now looking unlikely, Toulouse defender Costa may well be the man who the West Ham chief signs.

The Toulouse centre-back could be set for a big move to the Premier League from Ligue 1 this summer.

I think he’s more than ready to take that step up in quality, and he’d be a fine addition to Lopetegui’s ranks at the London Stadium.

However, he won’t come cheap.

According to a report from Calciomercato.it, Toulouse are demanding as much as £18 million from West Ham for Logan Costa, for one very simple reason.

And that is because we are an English Premier League club. It’s fair enough I suppose – the rest of Europe are fully aware that the Premier League is the best, richest and most popular league in world football.

The 6ft 3in centre-back is a real physical specimen, and he’d be a superb partner for Max Kilman at the London Stadium.

In 31 Ligue 1 outings for Toulouse last season, the 23-year-old averaged 1.3 tackles, 3.8 clearances and 2.1 successful aerial duels per game.

During those appearances he made 56.5 passes per game on average and recorded a completion rate of 84.1% (Who Scored).

He possesses impressive pace, is very strong in the challenge, and is at an age where he will only keep getting better over the next decade.

£18 million for those kind of attributes sounds like good value to me.

And if West Ham bring Logan Costa to the London Stadium this summer, I’ll be delighted – he’d certainly be a big upgrade on Zouma and Aguerd.
