West Ham United legend Tony Cottee has hit the nail on the head when it comes to the club’s transfer targets.

A large number of West Ham fans have been protesting against the club’s owners this season.

The list of grievances is lengthy.

But one major bone of contention is the lack of a clear plan and philosophy when it comes to transfers.

Hammers supporters believe the scattergun and often cheap approach to transfers consistently leaves West Ham a couple of injuries away from a crisis.

West Ham recruitment leaves club one or two injuries from crisis

And so that has proved this season with injuries to Lukasz Fabianski and Michail Antonio widely accepted to have derailed what looked a potentially promising campaign.

David Moyes is fully focused on keeping West Ham up.

And he has 10 games to get the four wins – or three and three draws – needed to do so.

But his longer term plan is to build a more exciting, meaningful West Ham with the sound recruitment of young, strong, pacy, hungry players from the Championship, elite teams where perhaps they cannot get game time and Europe (whufc.com).

Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek look to be the first pieces in that jigsaw alongside the likes of Declan Rice and emerging talent Jeremy Ngakia.

Cottee spot on over desired Hammers targets

Now Hammers legend Cottee has told fans the kind of players he wants to see the club target in the summer. And he has got it spot on.

Speaking on Twitter Cottee said he would like West Ham to sign Brentford’s Ollie Watkins and QPR’s Eberechi Eze in the summer.

Watkins has scored 22 league goals this season for a Brentford side sat fifth in the Championship and are chasing promotion.

The 24-year-old striker is an English goal machine that looks destined for the Premier League.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Eze is an English attacking midfielder that is playing out of his skin for mid-table QPR.

He’s remarkably already scored 11 goals and supplied seven assists so far this campaign in the league.

Moyes and Cottee have right idea to ditch scattergun recruitment and target young, hungry stars

It is exactly the kind of transfer business West Ham fans want to see.

Supporters are tired of seeing ageing star names come to London for one last pay day.

Hammers legend Joe Cole recently told BT Sport West Ham are used by some players as a holiday at the end of their careers.

Cottee’s idea to target the likes of Watkins and Eze should be the blueprint going forward. And that’s regardless of the division West Ham find themselves in next season.

Spending money is one thing. Spending money with a plan is another thing entirely.

Pace, energy and youthful enthusiasm go a long way with West Ham fans.

Some of the club’s best signings over the years have come from the second tier. From Trevor Sinclair to Dean Ashton, Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio.

Bowen looks to be another too.

Follow Cottee’s plan and West Ham won’t go far wrong.
