Things are getting Real serious over Declan Rice and it may be the best solution for West Ham and their captain in the end.

Going into another major tournament with England and it is Rice’s future at West Ham that has been one of the big talking points.

There has been claim and counter claim in recent days but any West Ham fans following their skipper’s situation over the last year or so will know the score.

Rice has thus far refused to sign a new contract after being offered in excess of £200k per week – and £83m over the course of the proposed deal.

Because, as Rice has made clear in several interviews, for the Hammers midfield ace it is not about money, but competing for the top trophies year in, year out.

Insiders have made clear for some time that West Ham have privately agreed to sell Rice next summer.

But for any West Ham fan of a certain age, the idea of him joining Chelsea is abhorrent – regardless if it is Rice’s boyhood club.

Last season Hammers News reported on claims from Italian transfer reporter Gianluca Di Marzio that Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is ‘sure to want West Ham star Rice if and when he is available’.

And now interest from the Spanish giants has been confirmed in a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central.

As also reported by The Hard Tackle, Real Madrid have joined the likes of Chelsea and Man City in the running to sign Rice from West Ham at the end of the season.

While the end may be edging ever close for Rice with the Hammers, this could be good news for West Ham – and especially the club’s fans.

Let’s have it right, nobody at West Ham wants to see Rice leave the club.

But if that is – as we are being led to believe – now an inevitability then West Ham fans should actually welcome the interest of Real Madrid.

It would certainly be a lot less painful for Hammers supporters selling Rice to a foreign club rather than a London rival like Chelsea or a fellow Premier League outfit.

Given Real Madrid’s stature, it would certainly take the sting out of his departure should that day come.

West Ham should not even be entertaining the idea of selling to Chelsea. Behind Millwall and Spurs they are the club’s fiercest rivals.

Hammers fans had to endure nearly two decades of watching the Blues take their best players – from John Terry to Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Glenn Johnson – and lord it over them as they won everything in sight.

West Ham finally got one over on Chelsea by taking Rice when they discarded him and helping turn him into one of the best midfielders in the world.

So why should we no just accept Chelsea can have him back? And selling to Man City would just make them even more unbeatable and the Premier League even more dull than it already is.

Real Madrid is a fitting club for a player of Rice’s stature and West Ham fans could enjoy watching him from afar and willing him on to success. That would not be the case if he joined Chelsea or a Premier League rival.
