West Ham United fans frustrated by David Moyes’s lack of urgency on the transfer front will be worried after a journalist made a shocking claim about new Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara.
Liverpool have swooped to sign the brilliant Bayern Munich star for just £25million (BBC Sport).
West Ham are the only club not to have made any new signings this summer. Even Liverpool, who cantered to a first league title for 30 years, have gone out and made improvements.
Liverpool show the way while West Ham plead poverty
Hammers co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold are pleading poverty because of the global health crisis.
But that has not stopped Liverpool and West Ham’s other 18 Premier League rivals from taking spending close to the £1 billion mark.
It appears Moyes is not helping the situation, though, by dithering over transfer targets with the deadline just two weeks away.
The Hammers appear to be dragging their heels on a thus far fanciful pursuit of Burnley’s James Tarkowski. That is despite clear signs from Burnley that they will not accept anything below £40million and even from the player that he does not want to move back down south.
Insiders like ExWHUemployee claim Moyes is doing ‘due diligence’ on players. And talkSPORT presenter Jim White – who often trumpets his close ties to Sullivan and Gold – claims the owners are waiting for Moyes to give them other targets to pursue.
West Ham fans should be worried after ‘Dithering Dave’ turned down Thiago
The indecision and lack of urgency has seen the return of a nickname Moyes acquired during his time at Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton – ‘Dithering Dave’.
Toffees fans gave Moyes the unwelcome moniker over the time it took him to make decisions and substitutions in games.
That is something West Ham fans can very much relate to.
But it appears that indecisiveness has cost Moyes dear in the transfer market in the past too.
According to The Athletic journalist Daniel Taylor, Sir Alex Ferguson had arranged the transfer of new £30m Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara as a gift to Moyes when he replaced him at Old Trafford in 2013.
But Moyes cancelled the move because he did not know enough about a player who would go on to be one of the best midfielders in world football.
Moyes dragging his heels could get West Ham relegated
“Thiago should be a great signing for Liverpool – and another ‘what if’ moment for Man Utd,” Taylor said on Twitter.
“Thiago was Alex Ferguson’s leaving ‘present’ for David Moyes in 2013. Years of scouting, everything agreed. Then Moyes called it off because he didn’t feel he knew enough about the player.”

As many football fans pointed out following the claim, Moyes instead elected to sign Marouane Fellaini for £28million.
Now it is West Ham fans being left frustrated by the Scot’s apparent lack of urgency.
Manchester United’s loss is now Liverpool’s gain.
The trouble is dragging your heels at Manchester United might see you drop out of the Champions League places.
Doing the same thing at West Ham will get you relegated.
In fairness to Moyes the signings of Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek have helped restore his reputation when it comes to transfers.
But it remains to be seen whether the mix of the three Davids at West Ham can be a success in a fiercely competitive transfer market.
