West Ham United fans keeping track of deadline day on Sky Sports will have been left infuriated by their afternoon update from the London Stadium.
West Ham in deadline day battle with former hero Parker for highly rated Prem starlet – local journalist
Unpopular co-owner David Sullivan revealed on talkSPORT that West Ham had a £40million transfer budget last month following the controversial sale of young star Grady Diangana among others.
West Ham have spent just £5.5 million of that budget in signing Vladimir Coufal last week.
Hammers boss David Moyes has made it clear he is desperate for new signings in defence and midfield (whufc.com).
So West Ham were expected to be active on deadline day with the clock ticking down on the club’s chances to sign players from Europe’s top leagues.
West Ham have been linked with a host of players including Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.
But supporters watching Sky Sports News’s coverage of deadline day would have been furious hearing a transfer update from one of their reporters at the London Stadium this afternoon.
Reporter Aidan Magee was at the London Stadium and told fans it is unlikely there will be any new arrivals.
‘There was only ever a small chance’
And he said he was told this morning there was ‘only ever a small chance’ the club would be active.
He even went as far as to say wins over Wolves and Leicester suggest West Ham may not need any new signings.
“I think as the hours wile on the chances of that (new signings) are less and less, sadly, if you’re a West Ham fan,” Magee said at around 3.32pm on Sky Sports News.
“Having said that you might just think with the form they’ve had recently, maybe they don’t actually need anybody.
“I was told this morning there was only a very small chance anyway that West Ham were going to bring somebody in, defensive areas being the priority. But two clean sheets now, one against Wolves, one against Leicester maybe makes them rethink that.
“David Moyes said throughout the window that he’d only bring in a player who can improve what they’ve already got. Don’t forget that they did it in the last two games without Issa Diop as well, he’s still to come back.”
West Ham dicing with death if they fail to add to squad
Magee went on to state the only transfer news he expects to deliver from West Ham today is the departures of striker Xande Silva on loan and midfielder Josh Cullen to Anderlecht for around £1million.
If West Ham do not make any signings then Heaven forbid the Hammers suffer any injuries this season.
The squad is on a knife-edge in terms of the disparity in quality, energy, pace and workrate between the first XI and the substitutes.
One injury in any position and suddenly Moyes’s sturdy new look formation and setup starts to fall apart.
