Sven Botman is sure West Ham and Newcastle will come back in for him this summer as he plots move

Coveted Dutch defender Sven Botman is sure West Ham and Newcastle will come back in for him this summer as he plots a move.

West Ham and Newcastle seem to be operating in the same marketplace for players if the January window is anything to go by.

Newcastle tried – and almost succeeded – in hijacking West Ham’s move for Jesse Lingard in the winter window.

The Magpies and Hammers locked horns in a tussle for French striker Hugo Ekitike too. West Ham were also linked with reported Newcastle target Diego Carlos.

Newcastle were even said to be trying to sign Issa Diop from West Ham too.

Another mutual target for West Ham boss David Moyes and Newcastle’ Eddie Howe is reportedly Lille centre-back Sven Botman.

A recent from The Evening Standard claimed the 22-year-old is a prime transfer target for Moyes with the Scot planning a squad overhaul at the London Stadium this summer.

Central defence is one of many areas where West Ham simply must strengthen as part of a big rebuild in the next window.

Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson turn 34 and 32 respectively in May. And the Italian favourite is coming back from a serious ACL injury.

The jury remains out on Diop and so a new defender is clearly a must.

Botman would be a truly sensational addition for West Ham United.

But Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley recently stated she is convinced Botman already has his heart set on a move to St James’s Park.

Botman ended up staying at Lille in January and it looks to be a race between West Ham, Newcastle and AC Milan for his signature in the summer window, which opens on June 10th.

Now the player himself has opened up on his future in a new interview with L’Équipe.

Though West Ham and Newcastle are not mentioned by name, they were the two Premier League clubs vying for his signature in January.

And Botman is sure the likes of West Ham and Newcastle will come back in for him this summer as he plots a move away from Lille in the next step of his career.

“I accepted the situation (that Lille would not let him join Newcastle or West Ham in January),” Botman told L’Équipe.

“There were opportunities (to leave). But we also had the Champions League to play in, my first one. And we were in a good position in Ligue 1.

“I think these offers will come back (in the summer).

“I’ll see (what happens in the summer). If things go as planned, then yes (I will leave Lille). But first of all I want to finish this season well. The club deserves it. After that, we’ll see. I haven’t decided anything.”

Botman’s comments will be hugely encouraging for West Ham and Newcastle.

But what they also prove is that Staveley he certainly does not appear to have set his heart on the Magpies over the Hammers or anyone else.
