West Ham want James McCarthy on loan from Everton, according to The Daily Mail.
With a new central midfielder being prioritised in January, Manuel Pellegrini is considering a move for McCarthy.
West Ham are in discussions with Gary Medel, according to the same report, but McCarthy is an alternative option.
The 28-year-old has been out injured for most of 2018 but has over 200 Premier League appearances to his name from his time with Wigan Athletic and Everton.
Having been in England since 2009, McCarthy offers experience and a tough-tackling approach in midfield.
McCarthy is an infamous name to West Ham supporters for his controversial clash with Dimitri Payet.
A horror tackle from McCarthy injured the Frenchman during Slaven Bilic’s time at West Ham.
West Ham fans are therefore sceptical about signing the Republic of Ireland international.
Although they acknowledge that a central midfielder is needed, a combination of his recent injury and his unpopularity is putting West Ham fans off.
Here are some things that West Ham fans are saying about a potential loan swoop for McCarthy.
Blokes been injured over a year. This would be such a Moyes-like West Ham signing

Not a fan of him at all, due to the time he deliberately injured Payet in 15/16. I don't think he does anything that Reece Oxford or Conor Coventry wouldn't be able to do themselves.
However, if he is someone that Pellegrini would want, then I respect my managers choice. https://t.co/YHBHMjbxww
