Spanish press claim West Ham have made Maxi Gomez breakthrough to beat Valencia to striker

West Ham United have beaten off competition to win the race to sign Maxi Gomez according to the Spanish press.

West Ham dramatically stepped up their efforts to sign Celta Vigo striker Gomez in the last four days.

It comes after the Hammers agreed to sell Marko Arnautovic following the player’s transfer request (

After the depatures of Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez before him that leaves Manuel Pellegrini with wantaway Javier Hernandez as his only senior striker.

As a result West Ham are becoming increasingly desperate to add at least one, if not two, new forwards to their squad.

Pellegrini’s forward thinking

Uruguayan forward Gomez has been the Chilean’s prime striker target since January.

West Ham want the 22-year-old as part of a young, talented team being forged by Pellegrini and Mario Husillos.

The Gomez pursuit has had more twists than the London Stadium’s Orbital Tower. West Ham fans don’t know whether they are coming or going.

Hammers closing the Gomez gap?

But now according to a new report from aocontraataqueRG – as also reported by Football Espana – West Ham are set to seal the £45million signing of the star.

According to Spanish sports radio station aocontraataqueRG West Ham have ‘pipped’ Valencia to sign the player.

“Reports in Galicia claim West Ham United have trumped Valencia at the eleventh hour to land Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez,” Football Espana reported on Monday afternoon.

“It had been reported that Los Che were close to sealing a deal which included former Celta forward Santi Mina returning to the Galician outfit as part of the transaction.”

Huge boost for West Ham as other targets fall away

If true it will come as a huge boost for West Ham boss Pellegrini and the club’s fans.

Supporters have grown exasperated as seeing a succession of targets seemingly slip away.
