West Ham United have announced that Pablo Zabaleta has signed a one-year extension but some supporters aren’t convinced.

There had been much speculation over the veteran Argentine’s future in recent months.

Some reports claimed he was set to take up a coaching role in Qatar (Arab News).

Others claimed he was wanted back at former club Manchester City to join Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff (Claret & Hugh).

‘Great news, I’m happy and honoured’

But the 33-year-old fans’s favourite has signed a one-year extension with the Hammers instead (whufc.com).

“It’s great news and I’m so happy,” the defender told the club’s official website.

“I’m enjoying my time at West Ham and I’ve got so much respect and so much passion for this profession. I’m still enjoying it and it’s made me feel I can go for another year.

“I just want to focus on what we’re doing with the Club and with the team this season and be ready to go again next season, because I just want to enjoy every single moment.”

Some fans unconvinced

Adored by West Ham fans and a legend at Man City, Zabaleta is regarded as one of the finest full-backs in Premier League history.

Indeed Hammers fans have been singing ‘One more year Zabaleta throughout the season’.

The vast majority of West Ham fans were delighted by the news.

But somewhat surprisingly there were a few who feel it is a year too far if they want to progress as a team.

City fans make Zabaleta claim

And Man City fans believe the contract extension is merely putting off the inevitable.

They believe their former defender will return ‘home’ for the 2020/21 season as part of Guardiola’s setup.

They claim Zabaleta has already agreed to return to the Etihad the following summer.

That would extinguish any hopes Manuel Pellegrini might have of keeping his vastly experienced football brain on their own staff.

Here are a selection of posts on Twitter from West Ham and Manchester City fans reacting to the announcement.
