West Ham United are on the brink of completing the sensational signing of striker Maxi Gomez but face an anxious wait.
According to several different sources, including Sky Sports, West Ham are on the verge of signing the sought after Celta Vigo star.
The deal will reportedly be concluded before the transfer deadline.
But Manuel Pellegrini will have to wait until next season to have the 22-year-old goalscorer at his disposal.
Hammers face anxious wait
That’s because the agreement on the £40 million transfer between Celta and the Hammers will see Gomez remain in Spain until the summer.
Celta are battling against relegation and desperately need his goals.
As a result West Ham face an anxious wait for their new star who was also wanted by Barcelona.
Anything could happen in the remaining six four months of the season.
And pessimistic Hammers fans will be concerned he could pick up a serious injury given their ill luck over the years and this season on that front.
West Ham getting ‘coming star’ of world football if they sign Gomez
Pellegrini is currently nursing a Premier League-worst injury list.
It would be typical of West Ham’s bad fortune if Gomez was to join that list before even kicking a ball for the club.
No doubt there will be disclaimers and insurances in place for that eventuality given the huge amount of money involved.
Should West Ham complete the signing of Gomez they will be getting one of the ‘coming stars’ of world football.
That is according to self-styled South American football expert Tim Vickery, read the full story here.
“The Uruguyan in Spain (that everyone is talking about at the moment) is Maxi Gomez,” Vickery told talkSPORT.
“He’s a bull-like striker. And if he doesn’t go to Barcelona as a potential long-term Luis Suarez replacement, then look for the Premier League. Because you could see him going in there… he is a coming star.”
