This is not another Cristiano Ronaldo; the living personification of ego itself in pursuit of a league that will bend to his will and tell him daily just how wonderful he really is. This is not a Riyad Mahrez, a Karim Benzema, a Sadio Mane, a Fabinho or even an Ivan Toney.

Crysencio Summerville is set to leave West Ham United a few months shy of his 25th birthday.
Al Hilal are paying just shy of £70 million – £55 million up front – for a footballer who hasn’t even reached his peak. Yes, of course, there is a sizeable financial incentive. Summerville will reportedly earn £200,000-a-week more in Saudi Arabia than he earns at West Ham.
There are, therefore, a quarter of a million reasons why the Dutchman is choosing the mediocrity of the Middle Eastern football scene over the Champions League music ringing in his hears at AS Roma.
But at a time when the lure of Saudi Arabia appeared to be losing its lustre – Aymeric Laporte returned to Athletic Bilbao while claiming that he was not alone in feeling like the whole project had fallen flat – Summerville is a signing which makes a statement.

Summerville will become the second-biggest Saudi signing, behind Neymar. But also a new posterboy for a league determined to prove that you don’t have to be on the lookout for one last pay-day to leave Europe for the desert.
“Honestly, one of the most exciting young wingers,” Saudi pundit Nather Al-Khatib tells Arabic Sports.
“He is considered one of the most dangerous wingers in Europe in one-v-one situations. He stands out due to his explosive acceleration and technical ability.
“He has exceptional close ball control and rapid changes of direction. His greatest asset is his directness. He is a constant threat to defenders, and I believe this addition – if completed by Al Hilal – will fit perfectly into [Simone] Inzaghi’s tactical philosophy, making their attacking play far more lethal.”
While Summerville will join such luminaries as Benzema, Ruben Neves, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Kalidou Koulibaly and Yassine Bounou – yes, the Yassine Bounou who saved his penalty at the 2026 World Cup – he arrives at Al Hilal side which is both star-studded and also starved of success.

They haven’t won the league since 2024, despite lavish spending and the appointment of former Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi.
Al-Khatib, however, believes that Summerville is ‘the missing piece of the tactical puzzle’. The man whose speed, unpredictability and ever-improving end-product will drag Al Hilal over the line.
