The Maxi Gomez saga is coming to an end. According to Spanish media outlet Super Deporte, Gomez’s future will make a final decision on his future either way today.
Both Valencia and West Ham are in the midst of a dramatic scrap for Gomez’s signature. And this transfer deal has continued to flip-flop with both sides receiving encouragement and disappointment.
This report by Super Deporte is headlined “Last Minute” as they believe this saga is approaching its conclusion. Valencia do not want to wait any longer so both Celta Vigo and Gomez will be forced into a decision before the end of today (Tuesday 9th July).
Maxi Gomez: Where do we stand?
There are conflicting reports from both the Spanish media and the English media on the Gomez situation. And even the reliable and omniscient West Ham insider EXWHUEmployee has admitted that this could go either way.
Various news outlets (including this one from Super Deporte) claim that West Ham have triggered Gomez’s €50m (roughly £45m) release clause. But Valencia will pay slightly less money and offer Santi Mina (permanent) and Jorge Saenz (long-term loan) in a part-exchange deal.
Gomez appears to prefer a move to Valencia. The Uruguay international would not have to adjust to a new country, new league and a new language by remaining in Spain. Valencia can also offer him Champions League football.
But West Ham’s project must tempt the 22-year-old to some extent. Why else would he take so long over this decision? And West Ham can offer Gomez more money so that could play a factor.
Whether Gomez ends up at Valencia or West Ham, this is now dragging on. It will be a relief when it is all over (whichever way) and that appears to be happening today.
