According to a report from Il Messaggero, West Ham could offer Fabian Balbuena to Lazio as part of a swap deal that would see Thomas Strakosha move to the London Stadium.
Hammers boss David Moyes desperately needs to sign a new striker this month.
The Scot could really do with a new left-back and central midfielder as well.
On the face of it, the goalkeeping department is the last position West Ham should be looking to strengthen this month.
Delve a little deeper, however, and there is real reason for concern.
Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph will be 36 and 34 respectively before the start of next season.
The Hammers do have youngsters Nathan Trott, Joseph Anang and Krisztian Hegyi all coming through the ranks. None of them are ready to be playing regular Premier League football, however.
West Ham eye Thomas Strakosha and Fabian Balbuena swap deal?
Il Messaggero claims that West Ham are keen to sign Lazio stopper Thomas Strakosha as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department. In order to make it happen, the Hammers are prepared to send Fabian Balbuena in the opposite direction according to Il Messaggero.
The Albanian goalkeeper would be a solid addition for West Ham.
The 25-year-old has played 174 games for Lazio and let in 209 goals, keeping 49 clean sheets in the process (Transfermarkt).
Surely we shouldn’t be offering them Balbuena in return for Strakosha, however.
The Paraguayan centre-back has been in superb for West Ham this season. He currently finds himself behind Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna in the central defensive pecking order at the London Stadium, however.
The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer. So perhaps West Ham are concerned about losing the £4 million signing from Corinthians (The Sun) for nothing.
Lazio want around £23 million for Strakosha according to Gazette dello Sport.
So even if Balbuena was included in the deal, the Hammers would probably have to pay round £20 million for the Albian stopper.
And we just don’t think that’s realistic this month. Especially considering how much we need to strengthen in positions aside from the goalkeeping department.
