West Ham’s pursuit of Maxi Gomez seems to have hit somewhat of a brick wall in recent weeks.
The Uruguayan has been away on international duty at the Copa America. And because of this, everything seemed to go quiet.
They were dumped out of the competition by Peru on Saturday, however, and that’s surely good news for Manuel Pellegrini.
Gomez will now be free to discuss his future once again.
So do West Ham have renewed hope?
The Daily Star have given Hammers fans renewed hope today, however.
They suggest that the east London outfit are set to re-open discussions with Celta Vigo over the 22-year-old.
The British tabloid also claims that £35 million might now be enough for West Ham to prise Gomez away from Celta.
The Uruguay international is certainly one for the future, and for just £35 million, he could be a really fine addition for the Hammers.
He was far from prolific last season for Celta, however.
Whilst Gomez is a real talent, that is certainly something for Manuel Pellegrini to be aware of.
West Ham seem to be on the crest of achieving something quite special, and it would be no surprise to see them make a real push for the top seven next season.
The addition of Pablo Fornals might just take the Hammers to the next level. The need for an out-and-out striker is clear to see, however.
And whether Gomez for £35 million will be that man remains to be seen.
Either way, these are exciting times for West Ham fans.
The fact that they are even being linked with players like the Celta Vigo ace is evidence of just how far they have come over the past decade.
