West Ham will target a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window, according to The Independent.
There are several positions that could be strengthened when the transfer window reopens in the new year. But the club’s hierarchy has decided that a new holding midfielder is needed.
Through Manuel Pellegrini’s time at West Ham, Declan Rice has been the only real option in this position. Too often, he is doing the work of two players as he tries to protect the defence.
Carlos Sanchez was signed as a back-up but the Colombian midfielder is below the standard needed. West Ham fans have been asking for a new defensive midfielder for a while now and it could finally happen.
Who could West Ham sign?

There have been a few defensive midfielders mentioned in the summer and in the lead-up to the January transfer window. Santiago Ascacibar and Isaac Hayden were mentioned last summer so perhaps they could be options. Franck Kessie is another.
Ahead of the January transfer window, Abdoulaye Toure has been linked. The Nantes midfielder is a powerful midfielder and he could be on his way to West Ham, as per Football Insider.
Meanwhile, West Ham are said to be in pole position to sign Sander Berge. According to Bleacher Report, the Hammers are leading Liverpool in the £20m race for the Norway star. This could be an exciting addition if the board cough up the money.
