Report: West Ham to launch bid for Southampton’s Cedric Soares, Arsenal and Wolves also keen

West Ham will try to raid Southampton to sign Cedric Soares in the January window, according to TEAMtalk.

Cedric is out of contract next summer and a host of clubs want to sign him in January. The Portugal international has told Southampton he will not be renewing his contract so they have to sell in January or they risk losing him for nothing in the summer.

Arsenal, West Ham and Wolves have all taken an interest in Cedric recently. However, it looks like West Ham have moved into pole position. The Hammers’ leaky defence could convince the club to launch a bid in the new year.

West Ham’s willingness to firm up their interest with a concrete offer puts them at the front of this race. Southampton could be willing to sell, especially as Ralph Hasenhuttl often prefers Yan Valery at right-back instead.

Cedric: West Ham’s solution?

Cedric has vast experience, having played well over 100 games since joining from Sporting CP in 2015. He has three goals and 10 assists during his time with Southampton and he was on loan at Inter Milan last season.

In the recent past, a number of big clubs have been trying to lure Cedric away from the south coast. But his stock has fallen in recent times and he is not guaranteed game time with struggling Southampton.

Is it wise for West Ham to take a risk on the 28-year-old? While he might be a low-cost addition, he is not necessarily the answer to the defensive woes.
