Reports in the French media are expecting Morgan Sanson to complete his West Ham move. According to La Provence (via Sport Witness), Sanson will probably be moving to West Ham this summer.
This news emerged despite widespread reports that West Ham are closing in on Pablo Fornals. The 23-year-old should complete his £24m move to West Ham by the end of the week, The Guardian reports.
But reports in France maintain that West Ham could sign Sanson. Sky Sports News recently reported that the Hammers were in talks with the Marseille midfielder.
La Provence claims Marseille need to sell as a matter of urgency to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. After failing to qualify for Europe, several players need to be shipped and Sanson’s exit looks the most likely.
The report adds that the 24-year-old’s most likely destination is West Ham. Marseille want €35m (around £31m) for Sanson this summer.
Could West Ham sign Morgan Sanson and Pablo Fornals?
If West Ham spend £24m on Fornals, it is very unlikely – although not impossible – that they would spend £31m on Sanson in the same window.
Fornals and Sanson are similar players; attack-minded central midfielders who like to move forward with the ball. In that sense, both players are not too dissimilar to Manuel Lanzini.
And with Lanzini’s future in doubt, this is perhaps one way that both players could join West Ham this summer. Fornals is likely to join and Sanson might join later in the window – but only if Lanzini leaves.
However, with Jack Wilshere also on their books, West Ham do not need another creative midfielder of that profile. Instead, the Hammers should focus on bringing in a new defensive midfielder to sit alongside Declan Rice.
