Gabriel Barbosa has turned down a move to England as he edges closer to a permanent Flamengo switch.
According to the Brazilian edition of Fox Sports, Barbosa (also known as Gabigol) will move to Flamengo for around £19m. Inter Milan had offers from an English club – which could have been West Ham – but he rejected it.
Barbosa wants to complete a permanent move to Flamengo, where he has been thriving on loan. After a torrid time in Europe, the Brazil international is not interested in an English project.
West Ham and Gabigol
West Ham have been linked with Barbosa on a number of occasions in the recent past. Most recently, FC Inter claimed that West Ham would try to sign the left-footed striker in January.
Crystal Palace were another team linked with Barbosa. The Eagles, who recently beat West Ham, were contemplating a bid in excess of £20m for the prolific striker, according to Passione Inter.
However, Barbosa has his heart set on a return to Brazil. The 23-year-old has scored at a rate of just under a goal per game for the Rio de Janeiro-based side. Flamengo will now pay roughly £19m to take Barbosa to the Maracana on a permanent deal.
It looks like both West Ham and Crystal Palace will face disappointment in this transfer pursuit. One of the two London clubs has had an approach rebuffed by Barbosa. And both teams will be looking elsewhere for a new striker in January.
