West Ham look set to miss out on Edson Alvarez. According to ESPN, Club America star Alvarez is on the verge of joining Dutch champions Ajax.
Alvarez recently impressed in the Gold Cup. The Mexico international helped his country lift the North American tournament earlier this month. Now he is ready to move to Europe.
But West Ham and Wolves will face some transfer disappointment if this ESPN report is to be believed. A previous report by Record suggested that West Ham, Wolves and Ajax were all jostling for Alvarez.
And it seems like Ajax have won the race for the youngster. The Champions League semi-finalists, who won the Eredivisie last season, reportedly have a verbal agreement in place.
Edson Alvarez could have solved two problems
While West Ham’s priority is signing a new striker, Alvarez would have been a useful player for two positions. The 21-year-old operates at centre-back or as a holding midfielder.
These are two areas that arguably need strengthening this summer. Alvarez has played in central defence and central midfield for Mexico and he has looked comfortable in both positions.
But the Hammers have a limited budget this summer, which has been bolstered by a few player sales. West Ham must focus on signing at least one new striker then look at other areas which need addressing.
However, by that time, it looks like it will be too late to sign Alvarez. Ajax are closing in on the Mexican starlet, who could turn into a top talent in the future.
