According to reports in the Brazilian media, West Ham are preparing a big-money offer for Gustavo Cuellar.
The holding midfielder currently plays for Flamengo in Brazil’s top division. And the Rio de Janeiro-based club would not block his ‘dream’ move to Europe.
Cuellar has a €70m (just over £60m) release clause in his contract. But Flamengo are aware of West Ham’s approach and it seems like they will accept €30m.
Who is Gustavo Cuellar?
Cuellar is a defensive midfielder renowned for his tackling ability. The five-cap Colombia international played over 100 games for Deportivo Cali before moving to Flamengo in 2016.
He has since played over 150 games in red and black for the Brazilian giants. And Cuellar helped Flamengo win the Campeonato Carioca (Rio-based tournament) in 2017.
Cuellar has played a key role in Flamengo’s team this season. The Brazilian campaign has started recently and the 26-year-old has started all six Copa Libertadores games.
There could be one major stumbling block with this deal. Cuellar does not hold a European passport and would require a work permit. And considering his age and lack of international experience, this could be tricky.
