According to a report from Spanish media outlet AS, West Ham are ready to activate Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez’s €30 million (£25.7 million) release clause in January.
The Hammers really need to strengthen in central defence.
Angelo Ogbonna is on the wrong side of 31, whilst Winston Reid is very unreliable from a fitness perspective.
Goncalo Cardoso arrived in the summer, but he has failed to have any kind of impact whatsoever so far this season.
Manuel Pellegrini will be keen to bring in a young talent who is good enough to hit the ground running in January.
And AS claims that that man could be Nunez.
The 22-year-old, capped once by Spain, is a top class centre-back, and he would be an excellent addition for West Ham.
Nunez stands at 6ft 1in tall, so he isn’t the biggest of central defenders. But he is a great reader of the game, and his positional sense is exceptional.
The Spaniard is also great with the ball at his feet and his making a name for himself as a truly elite ball-playing centre-back.
And for £25.7 million he would be great value for West Ham.
Arsenal are also said to be keen on Nunez, however, so the Hammers won’t have things all their own way in their reported pursuit of the Bilbao ace.
