West Ham are ready to make a big-money bid for Guillermo Maripan. According to Chilean media outlet La Cuarta, West Ham will launch a $17m (just under £13.5m) bid for Maripan.
The Hammers want one new centre-back this summer. Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna shared the duties last season while Winston Reid was injured for the entire campaign.
Manuel Pellegrini wants another player in that department. Maripan appears to be his first choice. West Ham have been strongly linked with Maripan and could now press ahead with this deal.
West Ham will be hoping to sign the Chile international before the Copa America starts. The 25-year-old, who stands at 6ft 4in tall, was one of Alaves’ standout performers last season but could be on his way to England.
Lucas Perez deal as a sweetener?
West Ham recently sold striker Lucas Perez to Alaves. This could be seen as a ‘sweetener’; a deal which establishes a relationship between the two sides.
David Sullivan and David Gold will be hoping that Alaves look favourably upon West Ham’s improved bid for Maripan after allowing Perez to move for a low price.
After West Ham were co-operative, Alaves could reciprocate for this deal. Initially, there was talk of a swap deal but West Ham have already let Perez leave now.
However, La Cuarta reports that Alaves are sticking by their guns and demanding West Ham trigger his release clause. This stands at $28m (around £22m).
