According to a report from Sky Sports, West Ham are closing in on a deal to sign Boavista teenager Goncalo Cardoso.
The Hammers have looked very weak defensively during pre-season. And that will be a real concern for Manuel Pellegrini.
Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop will undoubtedly be the Chilean’s first-choice partnership.
But it could be argued that Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid are sub-standard deputies for the Paraguayan and the Frenchman.
And Sky Sports claims that West Ham are looking to rectify that issue by signing Cardoso from Boavista for around £2.75 million.
The 18-year-old stands at 6ft 2in tall, and he is very strong in the air. He is also fairly quick along the ground, and plays with a certain kind of maturity that defies his tender years.
Cardoso seems to have great potential, and £2.75 million seems to be an absolute snip for West Ham.
The Portugal under-19 international might not be ready for regular Premier League action just yet, however.
In spite of this though, he will still be a very useful addition for West Ham.
