According to a report from Vamos Azul, West Ham’s apparent interest in Orbelin Pineda was merely a smokescreen by the player’s agent to get his client an improved contract with Cruz Azul.
Back at the start of this month, The Hammers were one of seven Premier League clubs interested in signing the 24-year-old winger in January (90 Min).
The 24-year-old joined Cruz Azul in January 2019 for around £10 million (90 Min). The winger has proven to be a real hit with the Mexican outfit. He has racked up eight goals and seven assists in 68 games thus far (Transfermarkt).
The 21-capped Mexico international is a tricky winger who can play on either flank or even in a more central role.
And he clearly has something about him. Pineda rejected a move to Manchester City in 2016, according to a report from 90 Min.
West Ham are well stocked in the left and right wing departments. The last thing David Moyes should be trying to do is bring another winger to the London Stadium.
That seems to be a moot point now, however. According to Vamos Azul, the Hammers’ interest was concocted by the player’s agent in order to get his client a new and improved deal.
It’s good news for us though. Moyes needs to be identifying centre-back, central midfield and centre-forward targets.
Our reported interest in Pineda seemed strange at the time. It seems as though he may never have been on our radar in the first place, however.
