According to a report from Sky Sports, West Ham boss David Moyes is targeting two key signings this month – a box-to-box midfielder and a goalkeeper.
The Hammers’ problems in the goalkeeping department are obvious to see. Lukasz Fabianski has just returned from injury, but Roberto and David Martin are clearly not good enough to serve as the Pole’s deputies.
The east London outfit are also incredibly weak in central midfield.
They lack any kind of power and dynamism, and are desperate for an eventual successor to skipper Mark Noble.
Sky Sports claims that West Ham want to sign a box-to-box central midfielder and a backup goalkeeper, and they have a maximum of £24 million to spend on the two positions.
So who could the Hammers be targeting?
As far as goalkeepers go, West Ham have been linked with plenty. 90Min claims that Middlesbrough stopper Darren Randolph is a target, whilst the Sun suggests that Bournemouth-owned Asmir Begovic is a target for the east London club.
Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge has also been mentioned as a potential new arrival at the London Stadium (The Sun).
Central midfield options for West Ham include Abdoulaye Toure (Football Insider) and Joe Allen (The Express).
Now, none of those players named are very inspiring, but any one of them could be just what the Hammers need to move away from the relegation zone during the second half of the season.
And it will be interesting to see who West Ham do actually sign between now and the end of the month. If the Hammers do strengthen in both the positions mentioned, they will have a good chance of avoiding the drop this season.
