West Ham want to sign sign Napoli ace Nikola Maksimovic according to a report from Il Mattino, after Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho made contact with the Serie A outfit about the centre-back.

In truth, Spurs are probably more in need of signing a central defender that the Hammers are.

David Moyes should be doing all that he can to bring an established striker to the London Stadium before the transfer window slams shut.

Joe Mourinho, meanwhile, will be looking to bolster his defensive ranks as well as his centre-forward options after Harry Kane’s injury last night.

So will West Ham or Tottenham sign Nikola Maksimovic?

According to a report from Il Mattino, Tottenham have made contact with Napoli about signing the 29-year-old. West Ham have entered the race for the Serbian, however.

The Hammers were linked with Maksimovic in the summer (Gianluca Di Marzio). At the time, The Daily Mail claimed that Napoli wanted around £14 million for the 6ft 4in centre-back.

He will obviously be available for a lot less than that now, however, what with his contract running down.

And £9 million seems like decent value for the Serbia international.

In eight Serie A games for Napoli this season, the Serbian has averaged 0.9 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 2.4 clearances per game. He has also won an average of two aerial duals per match (Who Scored).

Maksimovic is a very strong centre-back. If West Ham can pick him up for a bargain fee this month, he would be a fine addition. Beating Tottenham in the race for his signature would be a real bonus as well!
