West Ham, Aston Villa and Sheffield United are all weighing up a moves for Nicolas Gaitan, according to a report from the Guardian.

The 31-year-old’s contract with Chicago Fire expires in December, when he will become a free agent.

The 19-capped Argentina international spent time with Benfica and Atletico Madrid before moving out to the MLS.

And now it seems that West Ham, Aston Villa and Sheffield United could all be prepared to offer Gaitan a route back to Europe.

The Guardian claims that the Hammers, Villa and the Blades are all prepared to offer the South American a two-year deal.

The British newspaper also goes on to claim that West Ham sporting director Mario Husillos has already held preliminary talks with Gaitan’s agent Matias Lipman.

Past his best?

The talented play-maker is arguably already on the downward curve of his career. He struggled playing under Diego Simeone’s intense setup at Atleti, and that could mean that he would experience similar problems adapting to the ferocious pace of the Premier League.

West Ham should be really careful about bringing Gaitan to the London Stadium. They have history of signing players who are well past their best.

And they really should not make the same mistake here with the Chicago Fire ace.

He does have plenty of winning experience, however, with four league titles to his name during his time in the game.

So the Hammers might just think that signing Gaitan will be worth the risk.
