Baptiste Santamaria is the newest holding midfielder linked with a move to West Ham, according to L’Equipe via Sport Witness.
Aston Villa and West Ham both hold an interest in Santamaria. The Angers SCO midfielder could be on his way out this summer with Fiorentina also interested.
Santamaria has a contract until summer 2022 but could still leave. Angers need to raise funds to sign some attacking midfielders. Santamaria would cost between €6m and €8m (up to £7m).
West Ham’s extensive midfielder search
West Ham have been linked with a number of midfielders. This is a priority position for the Hammers. Manuel Pellegrini has explored various options and a number of players have been discussed.
According to The London Evening Standard, Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey (both of Newcastle United) are West Ham’s top two targets after missing out on Andre Gomes.
Dani Ceballos has also been linked (The Express). But Santamaria is the newest name on West Ham’s wishlist. Alongside Premier League new boys Aston Villa, West Ham want Santamaria for their 2019/20 campaign.
Who is Baptiste Santamaria?
Santamaria is a defensive midfielder who played 40 times for Angers last season. He was a key part of their midfield but might be sold to raise some funds this summer.
The 24-year-old joined Angers from Tours in 2016. Since then, he has played 116 games for Angers. The ex-France U20 starlet has helped Angers establish themselves in the top-flight.
West Ham are hoping to sign Santamaria, who is entering his prime now. For a reported £7m fee, this could be a masterstroke or a gamble that doesn’t pay off.
