The Hammers allegedly chased the 28-year-old Clarets ace throughout pretty much the entirety of the summer transfer window.
The Telegraph reported in September that West Ham made a £27 million bid for James Tarkowski – one that the Clarets swiftly rejected.
ExWHUemployee confirmed those claims by suggesting that the east London club were prepared to bid in excess of £30 million for Tarkowski.

Burnley wanted at least £35 million for the two-capped England international, however, according to Football Insider.
In all honesty, we shouldn’t be paying anything like that for James Tarkowski.
It could be argued that he is worth that to Burnley because he makes them so much better. To West Ham, however, the Clarets ace is probably worth no more than £20 million.
James Tarkowski a good signing for West Ham?
Spending more than £30 or £35 million on the 28-year-old would not be a cost effective signing for the Hammers.
Eurosport reckons that West Ham could go back in for Tarkowski in January. The east London outfit could face competition from a whole host of Premier League clubs, however.

It is suggested that Sean Dyche may now be tempted to sanction the defender’s exit from Turf Moor, with just 18 months remaining on his current contract with Burnley.
David Moyes undoubtedly needs to bolster his central defensive ranks at the London Stadium. On paper Tarkowski, who earns £50k-a-week (Spotrac) would be a fine addition. Unfortunately, we just don’t have the money to make it happen…unless the owners drop a huge surprise in January.
We have signed Frederik Alves already remember. And who’s to say that he won’t go on to become a top class player for us.
We just can’t see the Tarkowski one happening. That won’t stop the media outfits linking us with him, however, with January just around the corner.
