Report makes James Tarkowski claim as West Ham continue search for centre-back signing in January window

West Ham will attempt to sign Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski on a free transfer in the summer rather than paying a fee for him in January according to a report from 90min.

Hammers boss David Moyes is in need of a new central defender in the January transfer window.

Angelo Ogbonna is out for the entire season whilst Kurt Zouma has only recently returned to training following a hamstring tendon problem that he picked up back in December.

Tarkowski is someone who has been constantly linked with a move to the London Stadium over the past year or so (Evening Standard and Claret and Hugh).

In fact, Claret and Hugh claimed that Moyes was ready to make a £5 million bid for the 29-year-old in the January transfer window.

The problem was that Burnley were demanding an extortionate £20 million for Tarkowski, according to the Evening Standard.

The East London outfit obviously won’t be paying that kind of money for someone who is out of contract in the summer…

West Ham eye up Tarkowski free transfer in the summer rather than January deal

90min reckon that the Hammers are prepared to wait for five months or so before snapping up the tough-tackling Clarets defender.

It’s understandable why Burnley don’t want to lose one of their best players midway through the season considering the fact that they’re sitting rock bottom of the Premier League table.

At the same time though, West Ham can’t be expected to pay £20 million for a 29-year-old who will soon be out of contract.

We’re happy to wait until the summer for him.

Tarkowski would be a strong addition for the Hammers.

He is strong in the air and is a real threat from set-pieces. The 29-year-old is a tenacious tackler and his playing style is somewhat of a throwback to days gone by.

talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist recently described the Burnley star as a ‘brilliant defender’.

With Kurt Zouma closing in on a return to action well ahead of schedule, West Ham’s need for a new centre-back this month isn’t quite as urgent as it was a few weeks ago.

The Hammers are right to wait for Tarkowski. Signing him on a free in the summer would be an unbelievable deal for the club.

And a sensible one at that…
