According to a report from French media outlet L’Equipe, Jose Mourinho has spoken to Thomas Meunier about a move to Tottenham as West Ham look set to miss out on the Belgian ace.

Both Spurs and the Hammers will be keen to sign new right-backs this month.

The Express claimed that the east London outfit want to sign the 40-capped Belgium international. Football.London, meanwhile, claimed last month that the north Londoners want to snap up the 28-year-old free agent.

Serge Aurier has disappointed at Tottenham, whilst Ryan Fredericks has been incredibly inconsistent for West Ham.

Paris Saint-Germain ace Meunier would be a great addition for either of the two London clubs.

But it looks like Spurs are set to beat the Hammers to the 28-year-old’s signature, according to L’Equipe.

In 27 appearances for PSG this season, Meunier has racked up one goal and two assists (Transfermarkt).

In 16 Ligue 1 outings, the 28-year-old has averaged 1.7 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 0.9 clearances and 0.3 blocks (Who Scored).

He is vastly experienced in playing at the very highest level. The 40 international caps Meunier has earned for Belgium are testament to his quality.

Considering the ongoing global health crisis, most Premier League clubs will undoubtedly be on the look-out for a bargain this summer.

Potential bargain

And Meunier will represent exactly that. He is out of contract with PSG at the end of the season and will be available on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old will most likely demand a fairly large salary, however. So Tottenham will have to weigh up whether he is worth the risk.

The Belgian is a top class player, however, and if Spurs do get him, they will surely have secured themselves a bargain. And West Ham will be very disappointed to have missed out on the PSG right-back.

Perhaps it might end up working in their favour, however. Jeremy Ngakia is coming through the ranks at the London Stadium.

And had the Hammers signed Meunier, the 19-year-old’s path to the first team would have been blocked.

Now Ngakia might just have the chance to shine. Let’s hope he lives up to his potential.
