West Ham United appear to be closing the gap on the potential signing of Maxi Gomez according to a new report.
West Ham have dramatically stepped up their efforts to sign Celta Vigo striker Gomez in the last 48 hours.
It comes after the Hammers agreed to sell Marko Arnautovic following the player’s transfer request (Sky Sports).
West Ham already needed a new forward after the departures of Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez.
Pellegrini’s forward thinking
So now Manuel Pellegrini’s situation has become even more fraught.
Uruguayan forward Gomez has been the Chilean’s prime striker target since January.
West Ham want the 22-year-old as part of a young, talented team being forged by Pellegrini and director of football Mario Husillos.
The Gomez pursuit has had more twists than the London Stadium’s Orbital Tower. West Ham fans don’t know whether they are coming or going.
Hammers closing the Gomez gap?
But according to a new report which claims to have a line to a West Ham insider, the Hammers could be closing the gap.
West Ham and Celta Vigo were reported to be £15.5million apart in their valuations last month.
West Ham had bid £29m while Celta wanted £44.5m.
According to fellow Hammers website Claret & Hugh, that is now down to just £8.5m as negotiations continue this evening.
Report claims West Ham are £8.5million away
Earlier news outlet Faro De Vigo said: “Celta does not intend to negotiate with West Ham that unless they are prepared to pay the 50 million Euro termination clause to take the footballer who will be offered a larger contract and higher wages than he would receive at Valencia.”
And Claret & Hugh later claimed: “A West Ham insider has confirmed to Claret and Hugh this afternoon that Celta is indeed holding out for £44.5m.
“The Hammers last bid was in the region of 40 million Euros (£36m). So (West Ham) are around £8.5m off the asking price. The club are thought to be considering increasing their bid but need to be sure Gomez will agree to personal terms. Mario Husillos is reported to be main West Ham representative to have flown to Spain.”
Speculation on social media since has claimed West Ham have a medical booked for the player for this weekend.
But reliable West Ham insider ExWHUemployee has explained that is standard for any players a club is in negotiations for.
