The Telegraph reported last week that the 27-year-old midfielder is a summer transfer target for Hammers boss David Moyes.
TEAMtalk then claimed yesterday that West Ham are actually now in pole position to sign Ross Barkley with Aston Villa not willing to sign him permanently from Chelsea in the summer.

Moyes will be desperate to bolster his central midfield ranks at the London Stadium.
West Ham have arguably the best double pivot in the Premier League in the form of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.
Moyes has little to call upon in reserve, however.
Ross Barkley keen to join West Ham
The 33-capped England international faces a bleak future at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel.
The Chelsea boss has an embarrassment of riches in the central midfield department.
TEAMtalk claims that the former Everton man is tempted to move to East London this summer.
So perhaps a move to the London Stadium could help spark Barkley’s career back into life.

The Chelsea midfielder possesses exceptional technique. He is very good with the ball at his feet. The former Everton ace is an impressive athlete as well when he is on top form.
In all honesty, however, we already have players like that in the shape of Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma and Jesse Lingard.
Barkley hasn’t exactly set the world alight during his loan spell with Aston Villa this season either.
David Moyes does have a good track record of bringing under performing stars back to their best, however.
So it will be interesting to see what the Scot could do with Ross Barkley, if West Ham do indeed bring the attacking midfielder to the London Stadium this summer.
