West Ham have been strongly linked with Gary Medel for a while now. And according to Turkish media outlet Fanatik, Besiktas are expecting a bid for Medel.
Besiktas are willing to sell Medel for the right price to raise funds. And they are hoping that West Ham follow up their interest in the veteran midfielder.
The 31-year-old only has one year remaining on his contract and he wants to leave. Manuel Pellegrini tried to sign Medel in January (as per Sky Sports News) but could now reignite his interest.
Where would Gary Medel fit in at West Ham?
Medel would probably come in to fix the defensive midfield problem. With Pablo Fornals set to sign, a chunk of West Ham’s budget has gone on an attacking midfielder.
But the Irons still need a holding midfielder to slot alongside Declan Rice or provide back-up to the England international. Medel operates in that role, offering tenacity and full-blooded commitment with his tackling.
Alternatively, the Chile international could provide cover at centre-back. If Medel joins, this could convince Pellegrini to avoid pursuing a deal for international team-mate Guillermo Maripan, who plays in central defence.
Medel can also play at right-back. With Pablo Zabaleta getting older, Medel could offer a third choice at right-back behind Ryan Fredericks. This could allow Ben Johnson to gain some experience on loan too.
