West Ham now face Premier League competition for FC Basel striker Albian Ajeti. According to West London Sport, Aston Villa have joined Brentford and West Ham in pursuit of Ajeti.
Brentford want Ajeti to replace Neal Maupay, who moved to Brighton & Hove Albion. But the Championship club are struggling to convince Ajeti to move to West London with the striker keen on a Premier League switch.
West Ham were thought to be the only Premier League side chasing Ajeti. As per The London Evening Standard, West Ham were in talks over an £8m deal for the 22-year-old. But now Aston Villa could beat the Hammers to Ajeti’s signature.
Obstacles between West Ham and Albian Ajeti
With just 48 hours remaining in the transfer window, Ajeti now appears to be West Ham’s top target. Manuel Pellegrini wants the Switzerland international to bulk out his attack with only Sebastian Haller and Javier Hernandez on the books.
But there are several obstacles standing between West Ham and this deal. Firstly, West Ham are quickly running out of time. The Irons will have to act quickly to beat the deadline and bring Ajeti to East London.
Secondly, Aston Villa provide Ajeti with an alternative destination. The Villans have not been shy of spending money this summer so they could blow West Ham out of the water.
Thirdly, West Ham’s limited budget has been widely reported. If these reports are true, then West Ham might baulk at Basel’s £8m demand. The Swiss club are reportedly not keen to allow Ajeti to leave on loan with a view to a permanent move.
And finally, Basel are in the Champions League. This is something West Ham cannot provide, although Ajeti would be paid more and offered Premier League football at The London Stadium.
