Real Sociedad have signed Portu, who was linked with West Ham. Cristian ‘Portu’ Portugues has joined Real Sociedad from Girona, the club’s official Twitter account has announced.
Portu impressed for Girona last season, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists. But he could not prevent his side from suffering relegation to the second tier.
Sociedad have offered Portu the chance to return to La Liga. And the attacking midfielder, who plays in the number 10 role or out wide, has jumped at the chance.
West Ham and Brighton had been linked with Portu. According to a report by Mundo Deportivo last month, the two Premier League clubs were jostling with up to 13 clubs for Portu.
But the Hammers’ interest was not widely reported so he was probably a back-up target. And he will be crossed off the wishlist now after joining Real Sociedad instead.
Did West Ham need Portu?
Portu has an impressive goalscoring record considering he was playing in midfield for a struggling side. But he was not the priority for West Ham.
The Hammers have good options in the attacking midfield department. Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko, Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio can all play there. Youngsters such as Marcus Browne, Grady Diangana and Nathan Holland will also push for spots.
Perhaps Manuel Pellegrini was looking at Portu as an attack-minded central midfielder to compete with Jack Wilshere and Manuel Lanzini. But the signing of Pablo Fornals means that West Ham do not need any other players in this department.
Portu impressed in Spain last season. But the 27-year-old is not a priority for the Hammers. And Pellegrini will continue to build his squad with other targets.
