New comments from Manchester City Pep Guardiola have put West Ham United on red alert over the future of Declan Rice.
West Ham fans have a new hero in Declan Rice but for how long?
Rice turned 20 last week. But he looks like he has been bossing Premier League midfield battles with West Ham for years.
The youngster has been in imperious form for Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season.
He is good he has two countries fighting over his international allegiance.
Now new comments from Man City boss Pep Guardiola will have West Ham fretting that Rice is seriously wanted by the reigning champions too.
Rice one of four being considered by Guardiola for summer bid?
A host of recent reports claim Guardiola sees Rice as the perfect long-term replacement for ageing City fulcrum Fernandinho.
And now Guardiola has made his plans for Fernandino’s successor clear by revealing he is having four targets scouted every week until the end of the season (Sky Sports).
“I think with the way we play we need a guy who has of course physicality, is quick in the head and reading where our spaces to attack are,” Guardiola said.
“As many things as he can do, the better. I know it is not easy to find one player who can do everything.
‘We are watching’
“(You have to deal with) the price, the agents and the club if you want to buy the players so we will see.”
When asked if he has identified players who fit those characteristics, Guardiola replied: “Yeah, there are many. There are three or four we are looking for.
“We are searching for that position. We took a look. “We’ve seen many, there are many. There are three or four we are looking at, searching for that position.”
Hammers must hope alternatives are more impressive
Guardiola told the press he would have the quartet watched intimately for the rest of the campaign before making a decision.
Of course West Ham’s saving grace could be the other three players in the equation.
They are widely believed to be Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves, Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong and Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele.
Pellegrini and Hammers fans will be hoping one of the alternatives impresses Guardiola more than Rice for the remainder of the season.
Because if Manchester City come knocking with huge offers to club and player it usually only ends one way.
