Paul Merson suggested that Diego Costa could be the missing link for West Ham United, when speaking on Sky Sports News (1:03pm, January 2nd, 2021).

Atletico Madrid terminated the former Chelsea hitman’s contract last week, six months before it was due to expire, after he demanded an exit from the Spanish capital (The Sun).
Since the 32-year-old was let go by Atleti, some West Ham fans have pleaded with David Moyes to bring the enigmatic striker to the London Stadium.

The Spain international enjoyed an incredibly successful spell in England with Chelsea, racking up 58 goals and 24 assists in 120 appearances for the west London outfit (Transfermarkt).
West Ham signing Diego Costa this month is highly unlikely, however. Not least because of the 32-year-old’s whopping £110k-a-week wages (Sportekz).
West Ham a potential destination for Diego Costa?
Nevertheless, Paul Merson suggested that the Spaniard could be the missing link for the Hammers:

“He would be great for West Ham, perfect for West Ham, absolutely perfect. The way West Ham play at the moment, he could be the missing link, he could be the missing link.”
In his day, Diego Costa was a truly brilliant striker. At 32, however, it could be argued that he is now on the decline.
David Moyes has repeatedly insisted that he is only interested in signing young, hungry and talented players.
Costa clearly doesn’t fit into this category. It is highly unlikely that West Ham will try and sign him anyway. If we do, however, it could end up being a very big mistake.
The last thing the Hammers need is another ageing star looking for one last pay-day. We must learn our lessons from previous mistakes.
They are part of the reason why we are in such a mess financially now. This should be a new and exciting era for West Ham. Diego Costa seems like an exciting signing on paper. He’s just not the man to help take us forward, however, in spite of what Paul Merson said.
