Paul Merson suggested that Danny Ings would have been the absolutely perfect signing for West Ham this summer when speaking on Gillette Soccer Saturday (August 14th, 1:28pm).
Ings ended up joining Aston Villa from the Saints, however, for around £25 million (The Telegraph).
That seems like an awful lot of money for a 29-year-old injury prone striker.
Ings would still have been a very useful addition for West Ham nonetheless.
Paul Merson thinks Ings would have been perfect for West Ham
As David Moyes continues his search for a new striker, Merson believes the answer was lying right under his nose.
The former Arsenal man explained why Danny Ings would have been the ideal signing for the Hammers this summer:
“You know who would have definitely suited them, Danny Ings. He would have been perfect because he wasn’t too expensive and he is a man who can drop off. Antonio up front and him dropping off, to be fair he would have ticked every box.”
If Ings rips it up at Villa, there will be questions asked of West Ham and their failure to sign him.
At the same time, however, if the 29-year-old endures an injury hit campaign, there will be questioned asked of Villa and the wisdom behind paying £25 million for him.
Who’d be a football manager eh! One thing’s for sure, Moyes must bring in a top class striker if West Ham are to enjoy a successful campaign this term.
Who the man for the job will be, however, remains to be seen.
