West Ham need to strengthen in pretty much every department of the pitch in the summer. Central defence is clearly an area that needs bolstering. And Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren could be a potential option for them.
Covid-19 has disrupted the Premier League. It is highly likely that English football will not resume on April 3rd.
If everything does get back to normal in the next three or four months, however, the Hammers will have to start looking to add some players to their squad in the summer.
One area where West Ham desperately need to bolster is their centre-back department. Angelo Ogbonna will be 32 in May, Winston Reid’s future is far from certain, and Issa Diop has been linked with a big-money switch to Arsenal (The Mirror).
Should the Hammers make a move for Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren?
The Reds defender could be available for just £13.5 million, according to Italian media outlet Tutto Mercato Web.
Now, the 30-year-old is far from elite, but he has enough about him to add some solidarity and experience to West Ham’s back-line.
In 161 Premier League appearances for Liverpool and Southampton, the 57-capped Croatia international has racked up 243 tackles, with an incredibly impressive success rate of 71% (premierleague.com).
He has also recorded 273 interceptions, 1,009 clearances and 713 ball recoveries. Lovren has won 920 out his 1,426 individual duals and 582 of his 871 aerial battles (premierleague.com).
The Croatian has received a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans recently, but that is slightly unfair.
It must be hard for Lovren to come into the team every now and again and perform to his best ability.
We think the 30-year-old still has a lot to offer at the highest level, however. He is a strong and uncompromising centre-back.
And he might just be a great option for West Ham in the summer for just £13.5 million.
