Some interesting news broke last night concerning West Ham and Marouane Fellaini.

According to Sky Sports, the Hammers want to sign the 87-capped Belgium international this month.

The 32-year-old left Manchester United for Chinese club Shandong Luneng in January 2019 for a fee believed to be worth £10.4 million (The Daily Mail).

Fellaini has enjoyed a decent career in the game, and impressed during his early days in the Premier League.

He struggled at Manchester United, however, and considering the fact that he is now 32, it would surely be a backwards step for West Ham, should they bring him to the London Stadium.

A truly shocking signing

The Belgian is slow and cumbersome, and with the way that the Premier League is evolving, he would surely find it hard to move back to the English game, having spent a year in China.

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, having Fellaini in the team would encourage David Moyes’s side to play more direct. The route one, long-ball style might then be reverted to, and the quality of West Ham’s football would really suffer as a consequence.

He would also not be cheap, and would undoubtedly command an extortionate salary.

The Hammers should be looking for young, hungry and dynamic talents who still have a lot to prove in the game.

The last thing they need is another washed up has-been on big wages. West Ham must learn their lesson from previous mistakes in the transfer market.

And avoiding a move for Fellaini would be a good place to start.
