Opinion: West Ham hijacking Aston Villa move to sign James Ward-Prowse is a no-brainer

West Ham should try to hijack Aston Villa’s move to sign Southampton ace James Ward-Prowse.

According to the Guardian, Villa are keen to prise the 26-year-old midfielder away from St Mary’s this summer.

David Moyes should try and beat Aston Villa to the punch and bring him to the London Stadium, however.

Central midfield is an area where West Ham desperately need to improve as far as strength in depth goes this summer.

More quality competition and cover is required for Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.

And we think that the Saints ace would be just the man for the job.

West Ham signing James Ward-Prowse would be superb

The 26-year-old enjoyed a wonderfully successful campaign with Southampton from a personal perspective last season.

He racked up eight goals and seven assists for the Saints in 38 Premier League games (Transfermarkt).

JWP would provide exceptionally strong competition for Rice and Soucek. He would also offer David Moyes the chance to play with a top quality trio of midfielders in games against the better teams.

Ward-Prowse’s ability from dead ball situations would be a major plus for West Ham as well. Especially considering the aerial threat that we possess from corners and free-kicks.

When Aaron Cresswell doesn’t play it is worrying just how poor we look from set-pieces.

And the 26-year-old Southampton ace would undoubtedly be able to fix that particular problem in an instant.

Southampton will obviously want to keep the midfielder at St Mary’s.

If the West Ham owners have any kind of ambition, however, Ward-Prowse is a player we should be moving heaven and earth to sign this summer.
