West Ham have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Lyon hitman Moussa Dembele according to a report from the Sun.

The Hammers and the Red Devils are both in need of a new number nine.

Sebastien Haller is struggling at the London Stadium whilst Edinson Cavani was brought to Old Trafford as a short-term signing. So both clubs could do with signing the Lyon forward in January.

And if West Ham boss David Moyes manages to beat Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Dembele, it would be a real statement from the east London outfit.

It would also be a bitter pill to swallow for United considering how much they could do with a player like the 24-year-old Frenchman at the moment.

Dembele has a great goalscoring record to his name.

Elite ace on the cusp of Premier League switch?

The striker has scored 44 goals in 102 appearances for Lyon. He racked up 51 goals in 94 games for Celtic before moving to France (Transfermarkt).

The Frenchman is a top class striker. The 24-year-old has proved everywhere that he has been that he is capable of scoring goals consistently.

Dembele is an excellent finisher and is very composed in front of goal. The 24-year-old spends most of his time in and around the penalty area, but he does have a tendency to drift out to the inside left position.

The Lyon ace possesses exceptional movement, is a very hard worker and has the kind of pace needed to excel as a centre-forward at the very highest level.

Dembele, rated at around £30 million (The Sun), would be an exceptional signing for West Ham.

And beating Manchester United to the Frenchman’s signature would be a sign of how much ambition our owners have.

Whether we are able to compete financially with the 20-time title winners, however, remains to be seen.
