West Ham United boss David Moyes was reportedly interested in free agent John Lundstram but he has now signed for Rangers.

Widespread reports have claimed Moyes has been tracking Lundstram since he decided to run his contract down at Sheffield United.

The Scot gave the Liverpudlian his debut at Everton. And West Ham, in desperate need of versatile central midfield cover, were reportedly planning on taking advantage of the fact the 27-year-old was going to be a free agent this summer.

Long-linked Lundstram latest reported West Ham target to sign elsewhere as Rangers swoop for free agent

Lundstram has been long linked with a move to West Ham. A host of sources claimed the Hammers were seriously interested including Football Insider, The Star and insider ExWHUemployee.

West Ham need a player who can play in various midfield roles and provide good quality back to guaranteed starters Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.

But Lundstram’s name was added to a growing list of reported targets West Ham have missed out on as he signed for Scottish champions Rangers yesterday.

There are 50 days left of the summer window. But some West Ham fans are growing increasingly concerned that Moyes will not be sufficiently backed in the transfer market.

Moyes needs central midfield cover and Lundstram could have been an ideal, cost-effective option

West Ham need at least one striker, Moyes wants Jesse Lingard and will presumably look to sign an alternative if that is a no-go.

And the Hammers also need a new centre-back and defensive midfield cover.

Lundstram would have been a cost effective option. But it could be that Moyes cooled interest due to his dip in performances since deciding to leave Sheffield United.

Lundstram is a good age and just what West Ham need as back-up to Soucek and Rice in that he is a powerful, athletic, box-to-box midfielder.

The player would have been given ample game time too with West Ham competing in four competitions next season.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard said he was delighted to sign a player of Lundstram’s quality.

Gerrard delighted with Lundstram capture as Rangers chief reveals fierce competition for signature

“Having played in the Premiership, he has the undoubted quality to enhance our midfield with his technical ability and physicality and I was impressed with his attitude and ambition when we spoke over recent weeks. John is a winner and knows what is required to succeed at a club of this stature,” Gerrard told the Rangers website.

“He will add steel and presence to our midfield along with his quality which makes our squad much stronger, and to procure a player of John’s profile and experience is very pleasing.”

And Rangers chief Ross Wilson said the club beat off fierce competition from other clubs, although it is not clear whether West Ham were among them despite the longstanding links.

“We quietly worked hard at this deal in the background whilst understanding there was a lot of competition for his signature,” Wilson told the Rangers website.
