Nicolas Tagliafico to West Ham claims won't go away despite denials but there's a Venezuelan problem

There has been confusion surrounding West Ham United’s sudden reported interest in Ajax star Nicolas Tagliafico.

Yesterday a report from De Telegraaf claimed West Ham had agreed to sign Argentina left-back Tagliafico for around £10 million.

The news sparked excitement among West Ham fans who have watched Tagliafico star for Ajax in the Champions League in recent seasons.

Some West Ham fans speculated the Hammers may be forfeiting the equivalent transfer value in the form of money still owed to them by Ajax from the £20m Sebastien Haller deal.

Fans think it is magnifico that Hammers might sign Tagliafico

De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij broke the news with a post on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

But the man who first broke news of Donny van de Beek’s move to Manchester United claimed the move could be complicated given Tagliafico is in Venezuela at the moment.

“Ajax and West Ham United reach verbal agreement on Nicolas Tagliafico transfer fee,” Verweij said on Twitter.

“But closing deal for tomorrow night (transfer deadline) complicated. Player himself now in Venezuela.”

Insiders rule out move for Ajax star

But West Ham insiders ExWHUemployee and Claret and Hugh both claimed their Hammers sources were insisting they were not in for the 28-year-old.

“I broke earlier the rumoured signing of left back Nicolas Tagliafico of Ajax is not on his way to West Ham,” ExWHUemployee said on The West Ham Way Patreon site.

“The club do not have the funds to sign the player as well as (imminent arrival Nikola) Vlasic.”

Tagliafico talk not going away as Dutch journalist doubles down and transfer reporter claims deal is close

But despite West Ham’s reported interest being flatly denied, talk of the Hammers pursuing a deadline day move for the Copa America winner won’t go away.

Dutch journalist Verweij posted again shortly after saying: For the Ajax fans who already have a departure from Tagliafico going to West Ham: despite the verbal agreement between the clubs, that is far from a foregone conclusion. Rounding is described as ‘very complicated’. Player himself in Venezuela, agent in Amsterdam. Tension rises.”

And another football transfer reporter, Pedro Almeida, claimed a deal is ‘very close’.

“Nicolas Tagliafico is almost done to join West Ham from Ajax on a permanent deal for 12M€.

“The deal is very close and player can travel tomorrow to London. #WHUFC.”

Welcome to the wonderful wacky world that is transfer deadline day.

Better get the popcorn ready, it looks like West Ham fans are going to be in for an intriguing day.
